The Squeeze
A Journey of Creativity and Learning
It all started with the idea of combining hard and soft materials to create an object with various connections. This led to a design that combined a sponge and a part of a lamp, attached with wire. From this form, I made a paper version and focused on a detail to create the stool. I chose the sponge, keeping the ‘squeeze effect’ in my paper models: when you sit, the metal parts come together, creating this effect.
After finalizing the model, I made a 1:10 scale version and then a 1:3 scale version. With this information, I used Fusion 360 for a 3D form and working drawing. At school, I cut out all the pieces using a large metal shear and flex. My uncle taught me how to weld using an electric and MIG welder at home. Once I mastered that, I assembled the stool. After assembly, I painted it a cheerful but deep blue, which prevents rusting and gives it a fun, spin-like appearance with bright colors. To finish, I added a soft object, creating organic shapes turned into small cushions representing the gaps and minor imperfections, symbolizing the sponge.
This project was a significant learning experience, from material exploration to technical skills, and it reflects my journey of creativity and problem-solving.
